Examples of World Event Dreams about the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic
TRUCKS BLOCK ROAD & STOP ALL TRAFFIC I am in my car at the exit of a high rise building's garage, which leads onto a side street of a city. I have important business and am getting ready to turn left to reach the main road at the corner which leads to the highway. Before I can turn left—a huge oil truck turns onto the side street and takes up the entire road, so I cannot move. Then a huge armored vehicle carrying a lot of money also turns onto the side street. I am surprised and once again, I stay put. Finally after a while the coast is clear to get to my destination. I wake up wondering about the blocked road; such giant trucks do not usually show up there. The dream tells a story about unusual obstacles and delays. An oil truck speaks of fuel and what keeps things going as a metaphor about energy and health. An armored car carries money as a metaphor about finances and the economy. Both block the way forward and force me (all of us) to sit tight, go nowhere, and wait for the path to clear. The surprise felt in the dream hints that it is a Signal Dream—one of 27 types which indicates it is a message about something new that is about to appear on the horizon. At the time (early Feb 2020), like many, I had plans for the coming months but the dream said: "Hold on, you will have to put your plans on hold and stay put until health and economic issues clear up"—a clear parallel to the pandemic and its side effects.
HORRIBLE BLOOD SUCKING WORMS ESCAPE FROM A BUCKET I see two or three horrible worms, like bloodsuckers, squirming in a bucket. They give me the creeps. I think to myself that as long as they stay in the bucket all will be okay and I can ignore them until someone can deal with the bucket. But in an instant they begin to escape. Me and others try to catch the worms but once they get out, they multiply in seconds and it becomes impossible to contain them. In the blink of an eye they grow huge and are everywhere, it is a nasty, awful, scene. I wake up feeling very disturbed (it was Feb 20, 2020). A few days later news reports begin to flood the airwaves about the coronavirus outbreak in China and within a week (Feb 26), reports sounded the alarm about a world-wide pandemic as local and national governments rushed to find solutions.
FACE TO FACE WITH HOODED MAN IN DARK SHADOWS AND CORONAVIRUS HAIRCUT I am at home. I finish some work then stretch out on the sofa to rest; it feels good. As I relax, my black cat, Tao, jumps onto my lap, gets comfortable, and curls up for a nap. He is so glad to be with me, it makes me happy. Alongside the sofa I see a hall where people walk by that I have never seen before. The hall is a path outside my home, outside yet kind of on the inside, too. A few people walk by but do not look at me or even see me. {A metaphor of a thin veil of interaction between self and the world.] Suddenly a man dressed in black walks by, he is totally black from head to toe. His face is not visible, it is a dark shadow. I notice his haircut is in the shape of a coronavirus, with small round spikes on the top of his head in a dark black outline. Suddenly I feel and see his intense, piercing, eyes. He stares at me and my cat which snuggles peacefully on my lap. He has me “in his sites” like a gunman or sharpshooter. I feel an intense, evil, deadly, predatory energy as his eyes gleam a streak of light from a dark shadow. The peaceful forcefield of my cat seeps into me and somehow protects me. I am not afraid but I know this is not an energy I want to interact with. After a long while he walks on and is gone. I am relieved. The dream tells a story of a mystical encounter with the coronavirus as “a knowing energy” that actively seeks to overcome and do harm. It is aware of its destructive mission but is repelled by a peaceful stance. The dream confirmst that the destructive pandemic will eventually pass. Meanwhile, to get through the collective challenged, remaining at peace as personal strategy can be helpful. (Dream occurred April 3, 2020)
CAREER-ENDING PHONE CALL DURING THE PANDEMIC In late April 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Melissa dreamed that she received a call from the chief director of her company who said she had not been attentive at a work assignment session. As a negative assessment, Melissa knew the call from head office put tremendous limits on her ability to find work at the end of the pandemic. With financial security as a major concern, Melissa woke up feeling extremely anxious. At age 58, during a competitive job market and a financial freeze, at age 58 the call could end her career or signifiy a huge financial setback. It is a story about drastic news that leads to an unwelcome, scary, result. As a metaphor, not being attentive points to a needs to pay attention. A career-ending call is a hint about something drastic and lifechanging. We pre-dream everything important that happens to us, and in a time of great financial strain and setbacks, a career setback can be a real possibility. However, most dreams are symbolic, especially when stressed and anxious. Checking the symbolic options, the story highlights a need to pay attention to important tasks that can include non career issues and tells a story about an unexpected ending or change that leaves one feeling stranded. As a metaphor, dream expert Michaels suggested to Melissa that the dream could relate to other losses such as hearing about a loved one who contracted the virus or painful family changes, such as a son or daughter one is close to who, because of the pandemic, has to move far away to find work—so one’s “job” as a parent ends. BOTTOM LINE: The dream addresses a need to pay close attention to tasks and points to a surprise and disturbing loss or change. In the end, only time can tell whether the symbolic or actual version comes to pass. An important way to steer through the possibilities is to stay calm. In moments of quiet we hear the inner voice (a quiet still voice), during which answers and strength can unfold. Know that whatever crosses your path, trust in your own strength, trust you will work things out and find what you need.DREAMER’S INPUT—MELISSA SAID: "I have been giving lots of thought to the possibility that the loss relates to my relationship with my adult daughter. She has become very independent. I raised her as a single parent and struggle horribly with her not needing me any more; being a mother was my reason for being. It is difficult to fill my life, especially now that we are home and not working because of the pandemic. I feel so much more isolated. I now see and accept the dream is about my feelings of loss about my daughter. Thank you for helping me make sense of an upsetting dream. Fascinating! I do not remember my dreams often; this one really scared me. Thank you so much."
